Fiber Fauna

THIS PROJECT WAS MY SENIOR PROJECT WHEN GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE. IT IS A FICTIONAL BUSINESS AND FICTIONAL PRODUCT.

The fictional client is someone who would like an online store to sell premade wool sculptures as well as kits for people to learn how to make their own sculptures. (This practice is called needle felting and involves using a needle to entwine the fibers in wool, as they entwine they harden, and can be shaped and blended.)

For this project I was responsible for naming the business, creating the homepage of an e commerce website, packaging for premade and kits. I also created trading cards to go with the premade versions, and an instruction booklet for the kits. All photography is my own, all sculptures are my own, and all design work is my own. At the end of the year we were required to put our work together in a display for a weekend show in the school gallery.

The name came about because I wanted the brand to be dynamic. The idea was that this ‘company’ could release different theme kits and premades and advertise them as being collectable. Starting with dogs, but of course any theme could be added on, ideally all being animal related. Fauna meaning animal life, fiber being what they are all created from ‘wool fibers’.

With the idea that the brand be adaptable and dynamic I wanted a logo that could have a key aspect of itself change based on the theme yet still be recognizable as the same brand. I chose a chunky font that reflected the style of the sculptures used. And opted for an icon that could be changed based on teh kit. The main one features a dog paw and the color blue, but it could just as easily be a horseshoe and red and still be recognizable as the same logo.

Packaging/Trading Cards - The packaging for this project involved two different styles of box. One smaller and square. The label on top depicting the contents of the box (a premade sculpture). Again the intent is for these to be collectable so they come with a ‘name’ for the version you have and trading card where you can write in their birthday and favorites. It includes a cute cartoon graphic of the dog. These cards are heavily inspired by vintage ‘puppy in my pocket’ figures. I wanted to play on the concept that you can see a drawn version of a physical item and they feel like the same character. The packaging for the second box needed to have space for all materials, a foam pad to work on, wool, needles, a warning card indicating the sharpness of the needles, and the book of instructions. The label for this package needed to show which sculpture you can create as well as the difficulty level of that particular kit. These are indicated by custom drawings on the front of each box

Instruction Booklet - This was by far the most complex element to the project. It needed to contain a lot of information in a very concise way. On the front of the booklet I chose to again indicate which kit the booklet goes with, and did so by showing a photo of a completed version. On the backside I again wanted to push the narrative that they should all be collected, including a checklist featuring all avalabible kits with a check already placed on the kit the instructions belong to. The inner pages contain a welcome message, and reiterate the time the kit usually takes to complete and skill level required. From here the user sees a corner tab to open the document and can view a full page of step by step photographed instructions from start to finish. The copy throughout the document is meant to feel as though someone is talking to you directly and in a friendly way, not necessarily polished, but to give the feel of a casual craft night with friends rather than something more serious. This was an intentional choice and is carried throughout the brand.
